Thirty-fifth Regiment – Infantry – Volunteers.
The Thirty-fifth Regiment was organized under the provisions of an Act of Congress, approved July 22, 1861, and under instructions and authority received by the Governor, dated War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 30, 1863, as set forth in General Orders No. 4, dated Adjutant General’s Office, Trenton, N. J., July 11, 1863. The organization was to be effected under the requirements of existing orders governing the enrollment of troops, and of General Orders No. 191 (current series), War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 25, 1863, and in conformity with General Orders No 110 (current series), War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., April 29, 1863. The organization of the Regiment was immediately commenced, and the authority to raise Companies was issued to individuals in different parts of the State. The Headquarters of the Regiment was established at Flemington, N. J., and active measures were put forth to complete the organization at an early day, which was successful. The required number of men was raised and mustered into the service of the United States, by Companies, for three years, by the 13th of October, 1863. Company A was mustered in August 28; Company B, September 25; Company C, September 15; Company D, October 13; Companies E and F, September 18; Company G, September 25; Company I, September 18; Company K, September 15, and Field and Staff, October 14, 1863, at Flemington, N. J.; Company H was mustered in September 24, 1863, at Freehold, N. J., by Wm. Hudson Lawrence, Captain Fourteenth Infantry, United States Army. Under the same authority by which this Regiment was organized, the Thirty-sixth Regiment (Infantry) was commenced, but failed. The officers and enlisted men for that Regiment was assigned to and joined this Regiment. The Regiment was fully completed by the 14th of October, 1863, having a full complement of men. Officers, 37; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 865. Total, 902. It left the State October 19, 1863, and proceeded to Washington, D. C., where it was assigned to a Provisional Brigade, Casey’s Division, Defences of Washington. It remained in this vicinity until the 31st day of October, 1863, when under orders from the War Department it proceeded to Eastport, Miss., having been assigned for duty in the West. It then became a part of the Army of the Tennessee, and at once entered upon an active career. It was soon after attached to the Sixteenth Army Corps. It remained in this connection until July, 1864, when it reported under orders to General Sherman, and joined in the campaign before Atlanta, and proceeded with him on his march through Georgia and the Carolinas. At different times during the years 1864 and 1865 the strength of the Regiment was increased by the joining from Draft Rendezvous, Trenton, N. J., of large numbers of Recruits, Substitutes and Drafted men. The Regiment continued its organization and remained in active service until the close of the war, and those coming under the provisions of General Orders No. 77, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., April 28, 1865, were discharged at Washington, D. C., May 30, 1865, in compliance with orders from War Department, Washington, D. C., dated May 18, 1865. The remainder were mustered out of service near Alexandria, Va., July 20, 1865, by E. Alexander, Captain and Assistant Commissary of Musters, Bartlett’s Division, Twenty-second Army Corps, under the provisions of Special Orders No. 160, Headquarters Department of Washington, D. C., dated July 5, 1865.
The Regiment was first attached to a Provisional Brigade, Casey’s Division, Defences of Washington; then to a Provisional Brigade, Army of the Tennessee; then to the First Brigade, Second Division, Sixteenth Army Corps; then to the Second Brigade, Fourth Division, Sixteenth Army Corps; then to the Second Brigade, First Division, Seventeenth Army Corps, and at the close of the war was assigned to what was known as the Provisional Corps, Army of the Potomac.
The Regiment took part in the following engagements: Meridian, Miss., Feb. 10 and 11, 1864; Resaca, Ga., May 13, 14 and 15, 1864; New Hope Church, Ga., May 25, 1864; Near Dallas, Ga., May 26 to 31, 1864; Big Shanty, Ga., June 14 and 15, 1864; Kenesaw Mountain, Ga., June 16, 1864; Roswell’s Mills, Ga., June 18, 1864; Ruff’s Mills, Ga., July 4, 1864; Decatur, Ga., July 22, 1864; Siege of Atlanta, Ga., July 27 to Sept. 1, 1864; Resaca, Ga., Oct. 15, 1864; Little Ogeechee Creek, Ga., Dec. 5, 1864; Siege of Savannah, Ga., Dec. 10 to 21, 1864; Salkahatchie Swamp, S. C., Feb. 3, 1865.
