Battery C – First Regiment – Artillery – Volunteers.

This Battery was organized under the provisions of an Act of Congress, approved July 22, 1861, and under instructions and authority received by the Governor, dated War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 30, 1863. The organization of the Battery was to be effected under the requirements of General Orders No. 191, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 25, 1863, and in conformity with General Orders No. 110, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., April 29, 1863. It was fully completed, officered and equipped by the 11th day of September, 1863, at which time it was mustered into the service of the United States for three years or during the war, at Camp Perrine, Trenton. N. J., by William P. Martin, Captain and Commissary of Subsistence United States Volunteers, the strength of the Battery being – Officers, 3; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 141. Total, 144. It left the State September 25, 1863, en route to Washington, D. C.; soon after arrival it was furnished with the necessary outfit of guns, horses and equipments, went into Camp and commenced preparations for active service, having been attached to General Barry’s Artillery Brigade, Provisional Troops, Defences of Washington. It remained in this connection until the latter part of May, 1864, when under orders it proceeded to the front and joined the main Army. At different times during the year 1864, the strength of the Battery was increased by the joining from Draft Rendezvous, Trenton, N. J., of a large number of recruits, as well as by transfer from Batteries A and B. The Battery continued its organization and remained in active service until the close of the war, when it was mustered out at Trenton, N. J., June 19, 1865, by William H. Powell, Captain Fourth Infantry, United States Army, in compliance with General Orders No. 105, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 2, 1865.

The Battery was first attached to General Barry’s Brigade, (Artillery,) Provisional Corps, Defences of Washington; then to General Abercrombie’s Division, Provisional Corps, Department of Washington; then to an Artillery Brigade, Second Army Corps; then to an Artillery Brigade, Ninth Army Corps; then to an Artillery Brigade, Reserve Artillery, Army of the Potomac.

The Battery took part in the following engagements: White House Landing, Va., June 20, ’64; Charles City C. H., Va., June 22, ’64; Deep Bottom, Va., July 27, ’64; Reams Station, Va., Aug. 25, ’64; Fort Sedgwick, Va., Sept. 30, ’64; Before Petersburg, Va., (Battery No. 16,) Oct. 3 to 12, ’64; Fort Haskell, Va., Nov. 27, ’64 to March 29, ’65; Forts Haskell and Sedgwick, Va., April 1 and 2, ’65.
