Battery D – First Regiment – Artillery – Volunteers.
This Battery was organized under the provisions of an Act of Congress, approved July 22, 1861, and under instructions and authority received by the Governor, dated War Deparment, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 30, 1863. The organization of the Battery was to be effected under the requirements of General Orders No. 191, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 25, 1863, and in conformity with General Orders, No. 110, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., April 29, 1863. It was fully completed, officered and equipped by the 16th day of September, 1863, at which time it was mustered into the service of the United States for three years or during the war, at Camp Perrine, Trenton, N. J., by William P. Martin, Captain and Commissary of Subsistence, United States Volunteers, the strength of the Battery being – Officers, 3; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 141. Total. 144. It left the State September 29, 1863, en route to Washington, D. C.; soon after arrival proceeded to Camp Barry, D. C., where it was furnished with the necessary outfit of guns, horses and equipments, and began to prepare for active service. It remained in this connection until the 23d of April, when under orders it proceeded to the front, joined the main Army and was assigned to the Tenth Army Corps. At different times during the year 1864, the strength of the Battery was increased by the joining from Draft Rendezvous, Trenton, N. J., of a large number of recruits, as well as by transfer from Batteries A and B. On the 4th day of November, 1864, the Battery in connection with other troops, left the Army and proceeded to New York city to support the civil authorities, in anticipation of a riot during the Presidential election, this duty performed, the Battery returned and reported for duty November 21. The Battery continued its organization and remained in active service until the close of the war, when it was mustered out at Richmond, Va., June 17, 1865, by Jeremiah Remington, Captain Eigty-ninth Infantry, New York Volunteers, Assistant Commissary of Musters, Department of Virginia, under the provisions of General Orders No. 105, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 2, 1865, excepting a small detachment who under orders reported at Trenton, N. J., and were mustered out June 20, 1865, by R. Burnett Smith, Brevet Captain Eleventh Infantry, United States Army, in compliance with Special Orders, dated War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., May 18, 1865.
The Battery was first attached to General Barry’s Brigade, (Artillery), Twenty-second Army Corps; then to the Second Division, Tenth Army Corps; then to the First Division, Tenth Army Corps, then to the Second Division, Tenth Army Corps; then to an Artillery Brigade, Tenth Army Corps; then to an Artillery Brigade, Twenty-fifth Army Corps
The Battery took part in the following engagements: Petersburg and Richmond Turnpike, Va., May 10, ’64; Bermuda Hundred, Va., May 18 to 21, ’64; Before Petersburg, Va., (Battery Marshal) June 18 to 30, July 10 to 25, August 7 to 14, ’64; Near Malvern Hill, Va., August 15 and 16, ’64; Fussell’s Mills, Va., August 18, ’64; Before Petersburg, Va., Sept. 16, ’64; Varina Road, Va., Sept. 29, ’64; Chapin’s Farm, Va., Sept. 30, ’64; Chapin’s Farm, Va., Oct. 5, ’64; Capture of Richmond, Va., April 3, ’65.
