Battery E – First Regiment – Artillery – Volunteers.

This Battery was organized under the provisions of an Act of Congress, approved July 22, 1861, and under instructions and authority received by the Governor, dated War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 30, 1863. The organization of the Battery was to be effected under the requirements of existing orders governing the enrollment of troops, and in conformity with General Orders No 110, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., April 29, 1863. It was fully completed, officered and equipped by the 8th day of September, 1863, at which time it was mustered into the service of the United States for three years or during the war, at Camp Perrine, Trenton, N. J., by William P. Martin, Captain and Commissary of Subsistence, United States Volunteers, the strength of the Battery being – Officers, 3; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 141. Total. 144. It left the State September 26 1863, en route to Washington, D. C., and soon after arrival proceeded to Camp Barry, D. C., where it was furnished with the necessary outfit of guns, horses and equipments, and began to prepare for active service. It remained in this vicinity until the 22d of April, 1864, when under orders it proceeded to the front and joined the main Army. At different times during the years 1863 1864 and 1865, the strength of the Battery was increased by the joining from Draft Rendezvous, Trenton, N. J., of large numbers of recruits, substitutes and drafted men. In January, 1864, a number of recruits joined by transfer from Batteries A and B, and on the 18th of September, 1864, a number of re-enlisted men of the Thirty-seventh Regiment, Infantry, New Jersey Volunteers, joined by transfer. The Battery continued its organization and remained in active service until the close of the war, when it was mustered out at Richmond, Va., June 12, 1865, by Jeremiah Remington, Captain Eighty-ninth Infantry, New York Volunteers, Assistant Commissary of Musters, Department of Virginia, under the provisions of General Orders No. 105. War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 2, 1865, excepting a detachment of substitutes and drafted men, who under orders reported at Trenton N. J., and were mustered out July 11, 1865, by R. Burnett Smith, Brevet Captain Eleventh Infantry, United States Army, in compliance with instructions from War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 30, 1865.

The Battery was first attached to General Barry’s Brigade, (Artillery) Twenty-second Army Corps; then to the First Division, Tenth Army Corps; then to an Artillery Brigade, Tenth Army Corps; then to an Artillery Brigade, Twenty-fifth Army Corps.

The Battery took part in the following engagements: Howlett’s House, Va., May 9, ’64; Clover Hill Station, Va., May 14, ’64; Drury’s Bluff, Va., May 15, ’64; Before Petersburg, Va., June 8, ’64; Bermuda Hundred, Va., June 16, ’64; Deep Bottom, Va., July 27, ’64; Dutch Gap, Va., Aug. 13, ’64; Before Petersburg, Va., Sept. 2 to 10, ’64; Darbytown Road, Va., Oct. 7, ’64; Capture of Richmond, Va., April 3, ’65.
