Company A, National Guard, of Trenton.
This Company was fully organized in the Militia of New Jersey, November 30, 1860, and at the breaking out of the war was in a fine state of drill and discipline. On the 16th of April, 1861, a meeting of the Company was called for the purpose of responding to the call of President Lincoln for 75,000 men, but before action could be taken, Captain Murphy was directed by Special Orders from the Adjutant General’s Office of the State, to immediately guard the large amount of military stores at the New Jersey State Arsenal, at Trenton, N. J. The same night the Company marched to the Arsenal and went into service – thus being the first Company under arms in the North. Before their term of service was completed, a large number of the men of this organization joined the United States Regular and Volunteer Armies. After the three months’ service was completed, the Company was again recruited and volunteered as Company A, First Batallion, Pennsylvania Emergency. During the whole war the Company was emphatically the school of officers, and the Company boasts to-day, with none to challenge it, that it sent, for its size, more men to the war than any organization in the North.
