OFFICERS AND MEN OF NEW JERSEY IN THE War of the Rebellion. 1861 – 1865.

On the 15th day of April, 1861, the Proclamation of the President of the United States was published, calling for 75,000 of the Militia of the several States, under the Act of Congress, approved February 28th, 1795, to “suppress insurrection.” On the 17th day of April, a requisition from the War Department for the quota of this State was received by the Governor. His proclamation and order to detach one Regiment from each of the four Military Divisions of the State, was issued the same day, (Adjutant General’s Report for 1861.) The first company reported April 23d, and in seven days the four Regiments were completed.

NEW JERSEY BRIGADE – MILITIA.

The Brigade, consisting of the First, Second, Third and Fourth Regiments, was mustered into the service of the United States, at Trenton, May 1, 1861, by Major Theodore T. S. Laidley and Lieut. Alfred T. A. Torbert, U. S. Army. On the 3d day of May the Brigade left the State, arrived at Annapolis, Md., May 5th, and reported to the President, at Washington, D. C., the following day, being the first fully organized Brigade to arrive for the defence of the National Capital. At the battle of Bull Run. Va., July 21st, 1861, the Brigade was held as a reserve, but not engaged. On the expiration of their term of service, the Brigade returned to New Jersey, for muster out.

First Regiment – Militia.

This Regiment was mustered into the service of the United States, at Trenton, April 30, 1861, to serve for three months, by Major Theodore T. S. Laidley and Lieut. Alfred T. A. Torbert, U. S. Army, and left the State for Washington, D. C., May 3d, 1861, with 37 Commissioned Officers and 736 Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates. Total, 773. Their term of service having expired, they returned to New Jersey and were mustered out of service, at Newark, July 31st, 1861, by Lieut. Alfred T. A. Torbert, U. S. Army.
