NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS.

Tenth Regiment – Infantry – Volunteers.

This Regiment was organized under the provisions of an Act of Congress, approved July 22, 1861, and by authority issued by the War Department, Washington, D. C., direct to private individuals resident of this State, and not in any way under the control or supervision of the State authorities. Under the authority thus given, recruiting was commenced and its organization soon completed. It was then accepted by the War Department as an independent organization, having been designated the “Olden Legion,” The Regiment went into camp at Beverly, New Jersey, and from thence proceeded to Washington, December 26, 1861, with a full complement of men – Officers, 35; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 883; Total, 918; and went into camp at Camp Clay on the Bladensburg turnpike, one mile from Washington. On the 29th of January, 1862, an order was issued from the War Department, transferring the Regiment to the State authorities. It was then thoroughly re-organized, and designated the Tenth Regiment New Jersey Volunteers. On the 8th of April, 1862, Company G, which had been recruited and mustered as a Cavalry Company, was disbanded, by orders from the War Department. A Company of Infantry to fill the vacancy was recruited and forwarded to the Regiment, June 12, 1862. The greater part of the early service of the Regiment was performed in and around Washington, D. C., having been assigned there for provost duty. On the 12th of April, 1863, the Regiment was detached and proceeded to Suffolk, Va., to assist in repelling a demonstration by the enemy at that point. Again detached in July, 1863, to Philadelphia, Pa., in anticipation of a resistance to the draft. Again detached in the Fall of 1863 to the mining regions of Pennsylvania, to suppress the continuous rioting among the miners. On the 19th of April, 1864, the Regiment was assigned to active duty with the Army of the Potomac, and proceeded to Brandy Station, Va., where it was attached to the First New Jersey Brigade. Under the provisions of General Orders, No. 191, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 25, 1863, a very large number of the enlisted men re-enlisted for three years or during the war. Those whose term of service had expired and were with the Regiment, but did not re-enlist, were mustered out in the field, at various dates and places, while those who were absent by authority reported by order at Trenton, N. J., and were mustered out by Captain James W. Long, Second Infantry, U. S. Army. At different times during the years 1863 and 1864, the strength of the Regiment was increased by the joining from Draft Rendezvous, Trenton, N. J., of large numbers of recruits, and in 1865 by a large number of substitutes. The Regiment continued its organization and remained in active service until the close of the war, when those coming under the provisions of General Orders, No. 26, Head Quarters Army of the Potomac, dated May 17, 1865, were mustered out at Hall’s Hill, Va., June 22, 1865, by Major A. M. Tyler, Assistant Commissary of Musters, First Division, Sixth Army Corps. The remainder were mustered out of service by the same officer, at Hall’s Hill, Va., July 1, 1865, in compliance with Special Orders, No. 158, Head Quarters Army of the Potomac, dated June 22, 1865.

The Regiment was first attached to the Department of Washington, D. C., (provost duty); then to Corcoran’s Brigade, Peck’s Division, Seventh Corps; then to the First Brigade, (First New Jersey Brigade), First Division, Sixth Corps; and at the close of the war was assigned to what was known as the Provisional Corps, Army of the Potomac.
