NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS.

Thirteenth Regiment – Infantry – Volunteers.

The Thirteenth Regiment was organized under the provisions of an Act of Congress, approved July 22, 1861, and under a call issued by the President of the United States, dated Washington, D. C., July 7, 1862, for three hundred thousand additional volunteers to serve for three years or during the war. This Regiment was one of the five regiments required as the quota of this State under this call, as set forth in a telegram received from the War Department, dated July 8, 1862. The raising of the Regiment was immediately commenced, and was completed under the provisions of General Orders 75, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., dated July 8, 1862. The Regiment was fully organized, equipped and officered by the 25th day of August, 1862, at which time it was mustered into the service of the United States at Camp Frelinghuysen, Newark, N. J., by Louis D. Watkins, First Lieutenant Fourteenth Infantry, United States Army, having a full complement of men. Officers, 38; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 899. Total, 937. It left the State August 31, 1862, en route for Washington, D. C., where it arrived September 2, and at once went into camp near Fort Richardson, on Arlington Heights, Va. Here it was assigned to the Third Brigade, First Division, Twelfth Corps, Army of the Potomac, and immediately moved forward with the army, assisting in preventing the invasion of Pennsylvania and Maryland by the enemy. The Regiment was attached to the Army of the Potomac until September 24, 1863, at which time, by order of the War Department, it was detached, with the entire Twelfth Corps, for service in the West. They were then assigned to the Army of the Tennessee, and remained therewith until November, 1864, when they joined the Army of General Sherman on his march through Georgia and the Carolinas. At different times during the years 1863, 1864 and 1865, the strength of the Regiment was increased by the joining from Draft Rendezvous, Trenton, N. J., of large numbers of recruits. The Regiment continued its organization and remained in active service until the close of the war, and those coming under the provisions of General Orders, No. 77, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., April 28, 1865, were mustered out near Washington, D. C., June 8, 1865, by Edward A. Wicks, Captain 150th Regiment Infantry, New York Volunteers, Assistant Commissary of Musters, First Division, Twentieth Army Corps. The remainder were transferred to the Thirty-third Regiment, in accordance with General Orders, No. 12. Head Quarters Twentieth Army Corps, near Washington, D. C., dated June 1, 1865, and were mustered out with that Regiment.

The Regiment was first attached to the Third Brigade, First Division, Twelfth Corps; then to the Second Brigade, First Division, Twentieth Corps.
