NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS.
Fourteenth Regiment – Infantry – Volunteers.
The Fourteenth Regiment was organized under the provisions of an Act of Congress, approved July 22, 1861, and under a call issued by the President of the United States, dated Washington, D. C., July 7, 1862, for three hundred thousand additional volunteers to serve for three years or during the war. This Regiment was one of the five regiments required as the quota of this State under this call, as set forth in a telegram received from the War Department, dated July 8, 1862. The raising of the Regiment was immediately commenced, and was completed under the provisions of General Orders, No. 75, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., dated July 8, 1862. The Regiment was fully organized, equipped and officered by the 26th day of August, 1862, at which time it was mustered into the service of the United States at Camp Vredenburg, near Freehold, N. J., by William B. Royall, Captain Fifth Regiment Cavalry, United States Army, with a full complement of men. Officers, 39; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 968. Total, 1,007. It left the State September 2, 1862, en route for Washington, D. C. Upon arrival at Baltimore, Md., the Regiment was dispatched to Frederick Junction, Md., on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, to guard the bridge across Monocacy River, the advance of General Lee’s army having entered Maryland. The Regiment remained in that vicinity engaged in guard duty, and assisted in protecting threatened and exposed points along the upper Potomac, until the 9th day of July, 1863, when it was assigned to the Third Army Corps, marched to the front and joined the main Army. At different times during the years 1863, 1864 and 1865, the strength of the Regiment was increased by the joining from Draft Rendezvous, Trenton, N. J., of a large number of recruits. The Regiment continued its organization and remained in active service until the close of the war, and those coming under the provisions of General Orders, No. 26, Head Quarters Army of the Potomac, dated May 17, 1865, were mustered out near Washington, D. C., June 18, 1865, by J. C. Robinson, Brevet Major and Assistant Commissary of Musters, Third Division, Sixth Army Corps. The remainder were transferred to the Second Regiment, in accordance with Special Orders, No. 154. Army of the Potomac, dated June 18, 1865, and were mustered out with that Regiment.
The Regiment was first attached to a Provisional Brigade, Middle Division, Eighth Corps; then to the First Brigade, Third Division, Third Corps; then to the First Brigade, Third Division, Sixth Corps.
