NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS.
First Regiment-Infantry – Volunteers.
The First Regiment was organized under authority of General Orders, No. 15, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., May 4th, 1861. The Regiment was fully organized, equipped and officered by the 18th day of May, and on the 21st day of the same month was duly mustered into the service of the United States, for three years, at Camp Olden, Trenton, N. J., by Major Theodore T. S. Laidley, U. S. Army. It left the State, June 28th, 1861, with a full complement of men. Officers, 38; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 996. Total, 1,034. In the latter part of 1863, Company K failing to muster a sufficient number of men, and being without officers, was disbanded, the enlisted men having been assigned by transfer to Battery A, First Regiment, New Jersey Artillery, and to the several companies in the Regiment. In compliance with instructions from War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., September 11th, 1863, authority was issued for the raising of a new company to fill this vacancy, and on the 30th day of January, 1864, a full company of three Commissioned Officers, and ninety-two Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates was mustered into the service of the United States, for three years, at Trenton, N. J., by Samuel Canby, 1st Lieut. Fourth Artillery, U. S. Army, and were immediately forwarded to join the Regiment, in the field. Under the provisions of General Orders, No. 191, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., June 25th, 1863, numbers re-enlisted in the field for three years or during the war; those who did not re-enlist were mustered out, at expiration of service, at Trenton, N. J., by James W. Long, Capt. Second Infantry, U. S. Army, June 23d, 1864; while those who had re-enlisted, as well as those whose term of service did not expire with the Regiment, were assigned temporarily to duty with the Fourth and Fifteenth Regiments, but were subsequently consolidated into what was known as Companies A, B and C, First Battalion, and were mustered out with that organization, at Hall’s Hill, Va., June 29th, 1865, by Major A. M. Tyler, Assistant Commissary of Musters, First Division, Sixth Army Corps, under the provisions of Special Orders, No. 158, Headquarters Army of the Potomac.
This Regiment constituted one of the Four Regiments composing what was generally known as the First Brigade, New Jersey Volunteers, and was first attached to General Runyon’s Division of Reserves (Militia) at the Battle of Bull Run, Va., July 21st, 1861; then to the First Brigade (Kearny’s,) Franklin’s Division; afterward to the First Brigade, First Division, First Army Corps; then to the First Brigade, First Division, Sixth Army Corps; and at the close of the war was assigned to what was known as the Provisional Corps, Army of the Potomac.
