Fifteenth Regiment – Infantry – Volunteers.

The Fifteenth Regiment was organized under the provisions of an Act of Congress, approved July 22, 1861, and under a call issued by the President of the United States, dated Washington, D. C., July 7, 1862, for three hundred thousand additional volunteers, to serve for three years or during the war. This Regiment was one of the five regiments required as the quota of this State under this call, as set forth in a telegram received from the War Department, dated July 8, 1862. The raising of the Regiment was immediately commenced, and was completed under the provisions of General Orders, No. 75, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D. C., dated July 8, 1862. The Regiment was fully organized, equipped and officered by the 25th day of August, 1862, at which time it was mustered into the service of the United States, at Camp Fair Oaks, near Flemington, N. J., by Samuel M. Sprole, First Lieutenant, Fourth Infantry, U. S. Army, with a full complement of men. Officers, 38; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 909. Total, 947. It left the State August 27, 1862, en route for Washington, D. C., and upon arrival went into camp at Tennallytown, D. C., and at once engaged in perfecting its drill and discipline for future service. In October, 1862, the Regiment was assigned to and joined the First Brigade, First Division, Sixth Army Corps. At different times during the years 1863, 1864 and 1865, the strength of the Regiment was increased by the joining from Draft Rendezvous, Trenton, N. J., of a large number of Recruits, Substitutes and Drafted men. The Regiment continued its organization and remained in active service until the close of the war, and those coming under the provisions of General Orders, 26, Head Quarters Army of the Potomac, dated May 17, 1865, were mustered out at Hall’s Hill, Va., June 22, 1865, by A. M. Tyler, Captain and Assistant Commissary of Musters, First Division, Sixth Army Corps. Those not entitled to discharge were transferred to the Second Regiment, in accordance with Special Orders, No. 157, dated Head Quarters Army of the Potomac, June 21, 1865, and were mustered out with that Regiment.

The Regiment was first attached to the First Brigade (First N. J. Brigade), First Division, Sixth Corps, and at the close of the war was assigned to what was known as the Provisional Corps, Army of the Potomac.

H., Va., May 12 to 16, ’64; North and South Anna River, Va., May 24, ’64; Hanover C.
