NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS.

Thirty-first Regiment – Infantry – Volunteers.

The Thirty-first Regiment was organized under the provisions of an Act of Congress, approved July 22, 1861, and under existing orders governing the enrollment of troops. A draft for ten thousand four hundred and seventy-eight men, to serve for nine months, unless sooner discharged, had been made upon the Governor of this State by the President of the United States, August 4, 1862, and soon after full instructions for conducting it were received from the War Department. The draft so ordered, was not to interfere with orders governing recruiting, and all enlistments up to September 1, 1862, would be placed to the credit of the State. A general desire manifested and expressed by the State authorities as well as by prominent citizens throughout the State to avoid the draft, gave an enthusiasm to recruiting which caused the entire quota to be raised by voluntary enlistment, and in Camp by the 3d day of September, 1862, the time appointed for commencing the draft. The organization of the Regiment was fully completed, officered and equipped by the 17th day of September, 1862, at which time the command was mustered into the service of the United States for nine months, at Flemington, N. J., by Samuel M. Sprole, Captain Fourth Infantry, United States Army, having a full complement of men. Officers, 39; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 958. Total, 997. It left the State September 26, 1862, en route to Washington, D. C. Upon arrival went into Camp on Capitol Hill, but soon after removed to and encamped near Tennallytown, D. C., where it was assigned to a Provisional Brigade, Casey’s Division, Defences of Washington. The Regiment remained in this vicinity, engaged in picket and other duties, until about December 1, 1862, when under orders it proceeded to Aquia Creek, Va., en route to the front. At this place the Regiment was assigned to duty with the Provost Guard of the Army of the Potomac, and was then detached and proceeded to Belle Plains, Va., to do guard and provost duty, where it remained until the early part of January, 1863, when it marched to the front and joined the main army, having been assigned to the First Army Corps. The Regiment continued its organization and remained in active service until the expiration of its term of service, when it was ordered to return to New Jersey for discharge. The Regiment was mustered out of service at Flemington, N. J., June 24, 1863, by George L. Browning, Second Lieutenant Fourteenth Infantry, United States Army.

The Regiment was first attached to a Provisional Brigade, Casey’s Division, Defences of Washington, D. C.; then to Patrick’s Brigade, Provost Guard, Army of the Potomac; then to the Third Brigade, First Division, First Army Corps.

The Regiment took part in the following engagement: Chancellorsville, Va., May 2, and 3, ’63.
